Dr. Chidubem Obi Gerald, who hails from Anambra State of Nigeria made history as the first African to graduate with 5.0 GP in Medicine in I.M. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) Russia. He received the Award as best graduating student in the faculty of Medicine in Imperial Moscow. Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University (Sechenov University) is the oldest medical school in Russia, founded in 1758 as medical faculty of Imperial Moscow University.
Not all is joyful in the smiles. The excellent student who received multiple awards from the dean for his outstanding performance has a sad story behind his motivation. As a young teenager, he lost his little brother to a heart disease in a tragedy that ultimately shaped his decision to pursue a career in cardiothoracic surgery. The drive and relentlessness in chasing his dream has aparently paid off as Dr. Chidubem Obi graduated with a distinction and obtained special awards from the Russian insitution.
Besides his unrivaled academic achievements, Dr. Obi also shines in communnity activities, according to Sechenov University Press. During the Sochi World Festival of Youths and Students in 2017, he volunteered with the protocol team as a translator to VIP guests. Dr. Chidubem Obi also served as a volunteer in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Moscow. Since the Global Pandemic hit, Dr. Chidubem Obi has been assisting patients with severe COVID-19 at his University Teaching Hospital.
